Judges - 1 Kings

“I will never break my covenant with you.” The Israelites were finally living in Promised Land, and God reminded them of his never-ending covenant promise. Sadly, his reminder came in the context of abject failure on Israel’s part. Joshua had died, and the people would begin a cycle of sin that would lead to their eventual exile from this fruitful land they had longed for and fought for. God would raise up judges, prophets, and kings to turn his people back to the path of righteousness, but over and over they showed their need for the Perfect Judge, Prophet, and King—Jesus Christ.

In the previous two studies of G2R God’s Promises—from Genesis to Joshua—your students have discovered the widening lens of God’s amazing covenant of grace. Through covenants with Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, and Moses, they have seen the unfolding redemption story that points to the ultimate Covenant Keeper.

In G2R God’s Promises Judges–1 Kings, students will reach many “aha moments” as they see God’s faithfulness, trustworthiness, and grace despite his people’s failings. And you will guide them to understand that our triune God is a covenant God—the God who in the Person of Jesus bore the curse of the covenant so his people would receive the blessings of his promises.

Here’s a glance at the 13 lessons in this study:

  • Sessions 1–5: The cycle of sin, punishment, repentance, and deliverance through Israel’s judges (Judges 1–16)
  • Session 6: Confirmation of God’s blessing to the nations in the story of Ruth (Book of Ruth)
  • Sessions 7-13: Samuel, the last judge, and the beginning of the era of the kings with Saul and David (1 Samuel–1 Kings)

Remember the purpose of this course: G2R God’s Promises traces the covenant story from Genesis to Revelation. This is a different focus than G2R Bible Survey, the foundational course for preteens and younger teens, an exciting journey through every book of the Bible:

  • G2R Bible Survey focuses on the who, what, where, and when of God’s plan.
  • G2R God’s Promises zeroes in on the why and how.
